Oster Titanium Infused DuraCeramic[VP23][TA24] Flip Waffle Maker, Candy Apple Red (CKSTWFBF10MR-TECO)

Another giant in the food appliance industry, Oster, offers this little flip waffle maker with some features that are quickly becoming standard among waffle makers. However, it does have a new feature that seems to be particular to Oster, the Dura Ceramic non-stick ceramic coating.

Product highlights

Oster claims its Dura Ceramic non-stick ceramic coating is both natural and free of PFOA and PTFE chemicals. They also say it is four times more durable than other non-stick coatings and it won’t flake or peel. In addition, they say it will bake waffles in 20% less time.

The waffle maker flips in its cradle to assure even distribution of batter, and has an adjustable temperature control so you can bake waffles that are lightly browned to very crispy.

Cleanup is easy because you only need to wipe it out with a cloth. It also has a removable drip tray that you can remove and hand wash.

3. Chef's Choice 840 WafflePro Express Waffle Maker, Traditional Five of Hearts

Chef’sChoice 840 WafflePro Taste/Texture Select Waffle Maker Traditional Five of Hearts Easy to Clean Nonstick Plates Temperature Recovery with 6-Setting Color Control Dial, 5-Slice, Silver

While many waffle irons make a waffle that you can easily cut in half or quarters, Chef’s Choice has come up with a little different take on the usual waffle design. They have created a waffle that you can divide into five separate heart-shaped pieces, and of course it’s called the Five of Hearts design. But if you’d like the more traditional, square design, you can buy the waffle maker with those cook plates instead.

Product highlights

This professional-grade, heavy-duty waffle maker from Chef’s Choice has a deep, non-stick cook plate that bakes 5 heart-shaped waffles at a time, which could be a fun feature, especially for the kids. It also has a non-stick overflow channel that is easy to clean.

Settings allow you to choose whether you want a crispy waffle or a fluffy waffle. Chef’s Choice calls their “floating” top plate a unique design to allow for even distribution of batter without flipping.

This waffle maker has a quick heat-up time of only 90 seconds and the “waffle read” beeper will let you know it’s time to bake. So once you mix your batter, you have very little time to wait before you actually start baking.

While the maker is baking your waffle, the “baking” light indicates as much. And when the waffle has finished baking according to your specifications, the beeper will sound to let you know.

What's to like about the Chef's Choice 840 WafflePro Express Waffle Maker, Traditional Five of Hearts

I particularly like two features of this waffle maker. I like that it heats up so quickly and you can start baking waffles without waiting long minutes. The second feature I like best is the heart-shaped sections the cook plate produces. I also like the idea that if someone has a preference for the usual design of a Belgian waffle, they can have that grid as well.

What's not to like about the Chef's Choice 840 WafflePro Express Waffle Maker, Traditional Five of Hearts

This waffle maker is a little larger than most, measuring 12 by 12-4/5 by 5-1/5 inches and it’s quite a bit more expensive than comparable waffle makers. But it is a Cuisinart, so you know you’re getting a good quality product.

4. BLACK+DECKER Flip Waffle Maker

BLACK+DECKER Flip Waffle Maker, Silver, WM1404S

Black+Decker may be a brand known for power tools like drills and saws, but they also make power kitchen tools like can openers, toaster ovens, coffee makers and this particular waffle maker. This stainless steel with black appliance is of the flip variety of waffle maker and seems to have a lot going for it.

Product highlights

The non-stick waffle plate produces a classic round waffle with 4 quarters. Once you have poured the batter and closed the lid, you simply rotate the iron 180° in its cradle. This will help evenly distribute the batter to make sure your waffle is evenly cooked.

There is an indicator light that will let you know when the unit is plugged in, and when the waffles are ready for you to enjoy.

This waffle maker has a cool-touch handle with a lock to lock the plates shut to prevent dripping while your waffle bakes. And those plates are easy to clean.

The deep pockets of this waffle ensures you have plenty of volume for your favorite toppings.

The machine has seven different settings to produce waffles from just done and slightly brown to very well done, very brown and crispy on the outside. In either case, the waffles produced maintain fluffiness on the inside.

WAFFLE MAKER BUYER'S GUIDE

So you decided you want to buy a waffle maker. They are so simple and easy to use, so you can have waffles every morning. Some of the features are pretty standard, while some are unique to a particular product. You need to decide what you’d like to have and what works best to fulfill your needs.

Budget is also another consideration. You need to know how much you want to spend since waffle makers start around $20, but you can spend well over $100 for the high-end models. Despite the disparity in price, features are not that much different. So, here are some key features to consider when deciding on which waffle maker is for you.

Types

Generally speaking, you have three different types of waffle makers. You have the old-fashioned version that you use over a cooktop. You can get them for both gas and electric stoves. Plain and simple, you are the only reason a waffle comes out perfectly made as you have no real temperature controls.

The second type is the simple electric waffle maker where you pour in the batter, set the temperature and let it bake.

The third type is a relatively new development in waffle makers, those with the flip feature that enables you to rotate or flip the waffle maker on an axis, so you can more evenly distribute the batter. More evenly distributed batter allows for more even cooking and a more symmetric waffle.

Some of these waffle makers with the flip feature also store in the vertical position which means it will take up less room while in storage at the back of your counter or in a cabinet.

Temperature Control

All waffle makers have some sort of temperature control. They range from low, medium and high settings to the digital control with LCD display. Some click into position, some are dials and others have buttons to push. Each one has its pros and cons.

The simplest of all, the click into position low, medium, and high settings are just that, very simple.

You can learn more about temperature control and at what temperature to cook you waffles here.

Grill Surface

Whether you like very thick waffles or thinner waffles will play a role in determining which waffle maker you choose. If the cook plates, or grids, have deep grooves in them and very high squares, then that grid will produce a thick waffle. If, however, the grooves are not quite so deep in relation to the higher spots, then the waffle will be thinner.

Non-stick Properties

Most cook plates on today’s waffle makers have non-stick coatings, but just to be sure check the box or product description. You don’t want any surprises here. Non-stick properties will make your waffle maker so much easier to clean and care for.

Removable Grids

Because of the non-stick properties of these cook plates, cleanup is simple and easy. Nevertheless, anyone who cooks will tell you that from time to time food will stick and you have to do a little extra scrubbing to get things clean.

If you can remove the cook plates for washing, that’s always a plus. Many will say to wash by hand, but there are a few out there that you can stack in the dishwasher. If that’s what you’re looking for, once again, read the package and product descriptions carefully so you’re sure to get what you want.

Speed

On average, it takes about four minutes to bake a waffle to a medium brown, where it is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. A few waffle makers claim to be faster by only about 30 seconds. They cost a little more, so you have to ask yourself if the extra bucks are worth the savings of seconds.

Color

Most waffle makers come in a stainless steel housing; very attractive and very neutral to blend in well with any kitchen. However, a few come in different colors so you should consider if you like the look of it and if you plan to store it on your counter, will it fit in with the rest of your kitchen.

Warranty

Take a good look at the warranty of any product you plan to buy. Generally speaking, the better the warranty, the more confidence the company has in that particular product and the more support you will get should any problems arise.

Figure out if there is any satisfaction guarantee. For example, if within 30 days, or 60 days, or 90 days, you don’t like this particular product, can you return it for a full refund?

WAFFLE MAKER F.A.Q.

How do you clean a waffle maker?

Most waffle makers are made with non-stick coatings so cleanup is simple, quick and easy. Just take a soft cloth or paper towel and wipe it out. You’ll have to experiment to see whether a damp or dry cloth works best on your waffle maker.

If some batter stubbornly clings to the grid, pour a few drops of olive oil over it and let it soak for a few minutes. You should be able to wipe it out easily then.

You can learn more about cleaning a waffle maker here.

How do you use a waffle maker?

Begin by following the manufacturer’s instructions. But for the most part, all waffle makers operate in much the same way. Heat it up. Pour in the batter. Close the lid. Set the level of browning. Wait until the waffle is done.

Some waffle makers are of the flip variety, so you just have to flip it over once you close the lid.

Some will have a few more features than others like indicator lights, timers, and or beepers. They will vary, but they all operate in essentially the same way.

What can you make in a waffle maker?

Obviously, you can make waffles in a waffle maker but the creative people who work in their kitchens have figured out you can make sandwiches, appetizers, desserts, pancakes, and a plethora of other goodies with a waffle maker.

Your manufacturer’s manual will probably contain recipes as well as some great ideas of what else you can make with their waffle maker. Of course, there’s always the internet; a quick search will give you several sites to check out with some other great ideas.

Can you make regular waffles in a Belgian waffle maker?

To say Belgian waffles is like saying French fries. Regular waffles are Belgian waffles.

Can I make pizzelles in a waffle maker?

Pizzelles are great Italian cookies made mostly around Christmas, Easter, and on other special occasions like weddings. While they remind people of waffles, they taste very different and are much thinner and lighter than waffles.

You could of course use pizzelle batter in a waffle maker. However, you’d have to put much less batter onto the grid so that they’d come out thinner. Authentic Italian pizzelles are very thin, not much thicker than a sheet of paper and are made on a pizzelle iron that looks a lot like a waffle maker that is far more shallow than a waffle maker.

But, functionally, you could make pizzelles in a waffle maker. Just bear in mind they will look very different and may come out a little too thick.

FINAL VERDICT

All things considered I prefer the Chef's Choice 840 WafflePro Express Waffle Maker, Traditional Five of Hearts. It has a good reputation, the flip feature, and two different grids. One has the Five of Hearts pattern, and the other is the traditional Belgian waffle pattern with squares. However, it is a little pricey.

For a less expensive option, the BLACK+DECKER Flip Waffle Maker has great features and does the job as well.
