Step-by-Step Guide on How to Make Waffles with Pancake Mix

You probably heard footsteps or the doors to your children’s bedroom telling you they are waking up. They will soon be at the dining table for breakfast. Things turn out bad when they come to the kitchen, and the dad joins them to find you making a pancake mix, but they begin whining about them before they are even made. Aren’t waffles and pancakes the same thing, after all? You ask, but they will not hear it. What happens after that since you cannot pour it down the drain? Just convert it to a waffle mix.

How, you ask? It is more easy than you might think and definitely not impossible. Do not disappoint your family’s cravings for waffles. Have no fear because the pancake mix was already ready for use because, with some adjustments, you can save yourself. It will be easier now for you to make them waffles with a crisp exterior and fluffy interior, just as they love it. You will only need to add some extra water, an extra egg, and extra oil to make the batter.

Let us try to do it here. To start this exercise off, it is important to note that waffles and pancakes are not the same. Yes, the two share some ingredients, but a closer look will give you the difference. That is enough to tell you that you cannot lie to your people that you made what they wanted. Again, a pancake mix will be runnier and pouring it into a waffle maker will run out of the sides and you will have a messy kitchen table and breakfast to deal with.

Let us look at the difference in waffle and pancake mixes first. To begin with, waffle batter recipes tend to take more sugar and fat; this is why are sweeter. The extra sugar helps the waffles gain the beautiful golden-brown look. While the waffle batter bakes in the waffle maker, the sugar caramelizes. On the other hand, a premade pancake mix will not have the sugar amounts it needs to become brown.

The waffle batter has a higher fat content compared to the pancake batter. This makes it easier for the waffles to gain their delicious crispy exterior while the pancakes are soft and floppy. So, to start your journey of making waffles from a pancake mix, you will need some extra fat.

A waffle batter requires a thicker consistency that makes better results. The pancake batter is on the thinner and runnier side. Such a consistency is okay for pancakes since the pan contains fat. When making waffles with pancake mix, therefore, you will need to add more mix to make the batter thicker.

As mentioned earlier, waffle batter requires more sugar and fat. To make great waffles with your pancake mix, you will need to add more of these two ingredients. You can begin with the additional fat to make the waffles nice and crispy.

Now we come to the fat. The amount that you had used for pancakes will need to be double that for the waffles. If for example, you had used 2 tablespoons melted butter, you will add 2 more to make them 4 tablespoons. You are now saying goodbye to pancake batter and hello to beautiful waffles.

Next in line is our sugar. Waffles need to have a beautiful golden-brown look. Therefore, we will need more sugar, about 2.5 times what you had used for the pancake mix. If you had used 2 teaspoons, you would need 5 instead, that is, 2 ½ more to your changed mix.

It is important that you have a list of everything that waffles need. In short, have these ingredients listed down and assemble them on your way to tasty waffles:

  • 2 cups of packaged pancake mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups of whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 5 teaspoons sugar

The ingredients will depend on the servings you have set. Do not forget the additions that we made previously.

Things that you will require:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls, different sizes
  • A digital scale
  • Waffle iron
  • Wire whisk
  • Metal spoons
  • Hand or stand mixer with a whisk attachment

Directions

Using a whisk, beat the eggs together with the vanilla extract. Add melted butter and whole milk and stir the mixture in a medium-sized bowl.

Whisk the mixture into the pancake mix. Continue whisking it until there is no single lump left in the batter. Allow the batter to sit and settle for about 5 minutes to allow it to thicken.

Once the pancake mix is converted into a ready-to-make waffle mix, get the waffle iron ready. Pour the mixture into the preheated waffle maker using your waffle or pancake batter dispenser. Cook it according to the waffle makers’ instructions.

If you want, you can add your own variations. You can mix up the mix and stir in your favorite sweeteners. You can also top the waffles with syrup or whipped cream depending on the meal course. You might also consider adding some toasted nuts, peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, mini-chocolate chips, or shredded coconut.

It is now ready to serve and enjoy. Serve it with the planned breakfast items as you had prepared, and then sit down and watch your family marvel at your culinary skills.

Now you do not have just an idea. You can make the waffles that your family loves with a pancake mix. You have realized it is just as easy, right? The next time you find yourself in such a fix, do not worry yourself. You will just come back to this simple guide, make a turnaround of the mix and get yourself cooking.

Just as you observed, some may not easily differentiate between waffles and pancake mix. I think I also know more now regarding their differences.
